USED TO
“Use” kelimesi tek başına “kullanmak” anlamına geldiği halde “used to + V1” kalıbıyla kullanıldığında geçmişte yapılan fakat artık yapılmayan alışkanlıkları, tekrarlanan eylemleri, durumları ya da şu anda yapmaya alıştığımız davranışlar ifade eder. Olay geçmişte meydana geldiği için “use” kelimesinin past (geçmiş) hali olan “used” kullanılır.
1- Geçmiş zamandaki bir alışkanlık ya da tekrarlanan eylemler:
I used to cry very much when I was a child. (Now I don’t)
Çocukken çok ağlardım (artık ağlamıyorum).
He used to work hard when he was a student.
Öğrenci iken çok çalışırdı.
People used to help each other twenty-thirty years ago.
Yirmi-otuz yıl önce insanlar birbirlerine yardım ederlerdi.
When I was a student, I used to take notes during the lesson.
Ben öğrenci iken derste not tutardım.
I used to ride a bike when I was five. Ben 5 yaşındayken bisiklete binerdim.
His father used to work in İzmir but now he works in Istanbul. Onun babası eskiden İzmir de çalışırdı fakat şimdi İstanbul da çalışıyor.
They used to watch cartoons. Onlar eskiden çizgi film izlerdi.
Fifteen years ago students used to go to library to study their lessons. 15 yıl önce öğrenciler ders çalışmak için kütüphaneye giderdi.
Örneklerde görüldüğü gibi geçmişte alışkanlıkları ya da tekrar edilen bir işi anlatmak için “used to”kullanılır.
2- Geçmişte var olan bir durum:
Ten years ago there used to be a lot of fish in the rivers. (But now there isn’t anymore)
On yıl önce nehirlerde çok balık vardı (artık yok).
There used to be a piece of land in the place of the Aegean Sea long ago.
Çok eskiden Ege Denizinin yerinde bir kara parçası vardı.
Örnekte görüldüğü gibi geçmişteki hal ve durumları anlatmak için de “ there used to” kullanılır.
3. Şu anda yapmaya alıştığımız davranışlar:
I am used to hot weather.
Sıcak bir ortamda yaşamaya alışkınım.
I am not used to the cold weather, but I will get used to the cold weather in Erzurum.
Soğuk ortamda yaşamaya alışkın değilim fakat Erzurum’da alışacağım.
Örnekte görüldüğü gibi şu andaki alışkanlarımızı ifade ederken “be used to” kullanılır. “be” nin present halde kullanıldığına dikkat ediniz.
Olumsuz cümleler:
Olay geçmişte meydana geldiği için olumsuz yapmak için “did” yardımcı fiili kullanılır. “did” yardımcı fiili kullanıldığı içinde “used” fiilindeki (ed) eki kaldırılır.
